The newest edition of the semiannual Waterkeeper Alliance “Waterkeeper” magazine is fresh off the press and hitting homes across the country now – here’s why this issue is extra special to us here at Riverkeeper.
Twice a year Waterkeeper Alliance staff and Keepers across the world deliver a truly one-of-a-kind and inspiring publication called “Waterkeeper”. The magazine release is one of great anticipation as it’s always so thrilling to read what Keepers across the world are up to. And to read about the many challenges we face in terms of water quality and healthy communities, but to also learn about the victories, the creative solutions the boundless opportunities to make a difference.
The new Winter issue is out, and aside from being packed with great stories about and from our Watekeeper brethren in the West (more on this later), it includes a very touching tribute to Mike Chappell who we lost in September of last year. You can view an online version of the magazine at THIS LINK, and if you’d like a physical copy, feel free to contact me at bart at cforjustice dot org.
Mike’s tribute is on page 16 if you are flipping through the online version right now. I found it fitting that it was placed under the “Ripples” section of the magazine. Hardly a day goes by that I’m not reminded of Mike or thinking about Mike in some way, and whenever that moment occurs it seems to stop me in my place and cause a nice, peaceful reflection. Like looking at ripple in a river, this moment can last a few seconds or several minutes. That memory, like that ripple, is really there to last as long as I want it and that’s important. I was honored to be given the opportunity to write about Mike. Thanks Waterkeeper Alliance!
I recommend you reading through the rest of the magazine as well (and not just because I penned another article in there too). There are great stories featuring many of our close working partners in this region, including:
- A cover story about stormwater and sewage control in the Puget Sound written by Chris Wilke, the Puget Soundkeeper
- An update about Exxon and megaloads and the work of the Big Blackfoot Riverkeeper out of Montana
- A celebratory post about the Columbia Riverkeeper’s work to shut down the Boardman Coal Plant
- Another victory article, this one about the Klamath Riverkeeper and a legal victory for salmon
- A great first-hand account and fantastic photography about the new Tigris Riverkeeper in Iraq written by Pete Nichols, our Western Regional Director from Waterkeeper Alliance.
