Day One:

A lot of reading, a lot of acronyms, and wearing a few different hats. That’s what my first day as Spokane’s Riverkeeper entailed. Some would define it as job security while others might shrug in disgust with the number of issues associated with one of life’s basic elements, water.

I’m taking it all the only way I know how: with an open mind and an eager attitude. And maybe most importantly, I’m looking at all of the work as a good sign that there are plenty of people and organizations with stock in finding out what can be done to protect and preserve the Spokane River.

Aside from the standard first day on the job tasks like filling out new employee paperwork, trying to remember co-worker’s names, and figuring out what door leads where, my first day on the job consisted of two and a half meetings. In those meetings I learned that my lawyers have pre-meeting meetings and that I’ve been tasked with finding a fast-talking auctioneer for our annual Dirty Martinis for Clean Water fundraising event. Then we discussed how I would organize 20+ people on a kayak trip… in three days.

All in a day’s work.

In case you’re wondering about the trip, our Thursday “Meet the Spokane Riverkeeper” kayak trip as part of the Spokane River Forum’s “Meet Me At the River Raft and Kayak Passport Series” is all booked. However, I’d love to meet you on Friday from 4 – 6 p.m. on the Saranac Rooftop. I’ll be hosting a reception with drinks and snacks and plenty of good conversation.

And as always, I’ll keep everyone up to date on what’s going on with the Spokane River, the Spokane Riverkeeper program, and other relevant topics here on The Living River blog.
