Postcard from the Big Eddy

Tim Connor offers a video tour of a favorite summer swimming spot on the Spokane River.

As I write it’s nearing ninety degrees outside and, well, some day’s a cold drink just isn’t enough. So, work schedule permitting, I jump on my bike and head out Government Way west of Spokane towards the “Big Eddy,” a vast pool of water not far from Downriver Golf Course and actually right below the extremely popular disc golf course just to the west of the regular golf course.

I began swimming here last year, training for the Long Bridge Swim up in Sandpoint. This is a stretch of the river where the water is especially brisk because as the summer goes on and the water level decreases, more of the remaining water is fed by the Spokane aquifer, which is dramatically colder. But it’s also very refreshing on a hot day and on my last trip there, yesterday, there were dozens of people tubing, paddling or hanging out on the beach, having a very good time of it.
