Karen Dorn-Steele will introduce Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Thursday.

Karen Dorn-Steele, a local and regional legend for her broadcast and newspaper reporting in Spokane, has accepted an invitation to introduce Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., at Thursday’s evening’s event at Gonzaga University’s Martin Centre. She was for many years the Spokesman-Review’s lead reporter on energy and environmental issues, and earned a prestigious George F. Polk award for environmental reporting in 1994, specifically for her reporting on the mushrooming costs of cleaning up the federal Hanford Nuclear reservation near the Tri-Cities. She is currently at work on a book about historical Hanford radiation releases, their effects on so-called “downwinders,” and the legal struggles of those who believe their cancers and other health problems are related to their exposure to Hanford radiation.

Karen’s remarkable career in Spokane is the subject of Tim Connor’s July, 2009, story and interview, “Outside Looking Back.”
