Untrashing the River

2009 Spokane River Clean Up nets a small mountain of debris.

The Friends of the Falls today released the vital statistics on the seventh annual Spokane River cleanup. More than 750 volunteers were on hand on September 26th to help comb the banks of the river in and around Spokane. When it was over, The Friends reports, the haul of garbage amounted to eight and a quarter tons of trash, including more than two and a half tons of various Spokane Riverkeeper Rick Eichstaedt with a haul of river flotsam, including a city warning sign, during this year's river clean up.recyclable materials.

The amount of debris collected was up by more than two tons over the previous year, with more than a 1,000 pound increase in recyclables.

The Friends of the Falls coordinates the annual event, which is next scheduled for September 25, 2010.
