A Real Showstopper

Not to delve too deeply into the grim-faced corporate culture behind the Center for Justice, but people should not be misled by appearances. Sure, our “chief catalyst” tends to dress like a basketball recruit on days when he’s not in court (you know, the court with a judge, rather than a backboard), and sure it was actually possible last week to purchase commemorative “dirty martini” glasses as a token of support for our river program.

But that’s just artifice, really, because as the headlines demonstrate, we’re constantly dealing with the pressures of high stakes litigation, mediation, and the latest mind-boggling challenge involved in fighting polluters, unethical landlords, and government agencies that sometimes act as though Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe is their model for compassion and responsiveness.

This requires a focus and a discipline that is understandably jaw-clenching and without relief unless, of course, a really cool bug shows up.

Then all must come to a stop like our video shoot yesterday west of town where Riverkeeper Rick Eichstaedt and GU environmental law clinic leader Mike Chappell were debriefing Scott Chaney, the Lake Spokane resident who made headlines earlier this week by detecting and pushing state authorities to come to grips with a fiendishly toxic blue-green algae bloom on the lake. We’ll bring the video and the rest of the story along shortly.

But, in the meantime, check out this spectacular praying mantis that came by to see what we were up to.
