Chivalry

Sporting men that they were, you couldn’t do much better for a pair of gentleman rescuers than Dryan and Cosmo Baker from Kalispell, Montana. It had been a day off for them too, what with Dryan taking leave from work and Cosmo taking a day off from the rigors of third grade.

“We’d just be out twistin’ around, maam,” is how Cosmo explained it.

Dryan was more interested in Page’s explanation for how she managed to get the BMW stuck up to its ball joints in the snow drift. To her credit, she just laid it on him, timing the scene out in slow motion, matching her admittedly poor decision-making to the physical positions achieved and sensations experienced.

“Whoa,” Dryan interrupted her at one point. “Were you medicated at the time?”

“Medicated?” she asked.

“You know, were you doing drugs?”

“Oh! No. But we had the stereo up way too loud. I think.”

“Well, Miss Page,” he concluded, “the only good thing about the situation here is that Cosmo and I are here to be able to hear you tell about it. Red here has the power to pull you out in small pieces, but if you want to get the whole car out we’re going to need something that can get us a better angle on the lift.”

Page was comforted that Dryan had used the word “us” to convey his commitment to helping rescue her car. It was as much chivalry as she could hope for. Still, they were going to need a tow truck. It was not going to be cheap.

“I have a cousin in Wallace,” Dryan reported. “He’ll do you as good as any.”
